I am deeply saddened by news – I heard last week – of the passing of Pamela Hartigan who was Director of the Skoll Center for Social Entrepreneurship at Oxford University’s Saïd Business School.
When I first contacted Pamela I felt honoured, excited and privileged that she agreed to contribute her ideas and teachings to the Careers With Purpose Summit. However, I regret that Pamela and I did not meet in person and it was only after discovering her lectures online, that I knew that she was an ideal candidate to be a speaker for the summit.
Take advantage of opportunities that are consistent with your values and what you believe in
And I looked forward to the day that we would meet. Not least because she was one of the world’s leading proponents of social entrepreneurship (as much as she hated the expression). But also because she was actively engaged in a number of initiatives to make the world a better place.
I feel fortunate to have interviewed Pamela to share her views and insights. Her passion and desire to pass on what she knew inspires me because she walked the talk and had first-hand experience of her teachings. During our conversation she said that we must “take advantage of opportunities that are consistent with your values and what you believe in” and, that we “ need to have the grit, passion and courage to stick it out”.
She was the personification of her own sentiment and we should use her words and deeds as motivation to play our part in helping to make the world a better place!
Rest in peace, Pamela.
